We all have that one space in our home that doesn’t receive a lot of natural light. For us it’s the middle of our home which is our kitchen, living room, and breakfast nook. The biggest problem area is our kitchen. You could stand in there on the sunniest day of the year and you’d never know. It honestly drives us crazy because we love natural light pouring in as much as possible. The first thing I do in the morning, even before a cup of coffee, is go around and open all the curtains and blinds in our home. Let the light pour in!

It’s amazing what natural light will do to help kick start your day. You can see in the picture below how dark it is in this space while in the dining room it shows an abundance of light.

We’ve had it on our home improvement list for quite awhile with how to solve this problem: installing skylights in our kitchen. It would completely transform the middle of our home! Wouldn’t you agree?

One that we’ve been looking into is the VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight. And for many reasons! This skylight of course brings in natural light to brighten dark spaces which would address our number one problem in the space, but it can also open to bring in fresh air. By installing solar-powered fresh-air skylights in the kitchen it will also allow us to open the skylights to release any cooking smells, let the fresh air in, or simply air out the home while we’re working on renovation projects. It would have many benefits beyond brightening our home.

I was curious with how they work and learned they can be paired with the VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO skylight automation system and smartphone app. I can even use my Google Home that’s already in the kitchen. For example, if I’m wanting a cozy day in, I can tell Google to “close skylight blinds”, and the blinds will automatically close. It allows homeowners to control the amount of sunlight coming in.

Kitchen

Bathroom

I remember following along with Shavonda’s bathroom renovation during the One Room Challenge in 2018. One of the best design decisions she made was adding a skylight to her bathroom because there was zero natural light before. She installed a VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylight. This allowed her to use the rich and stunning dark colors in this space and provided away to let some fresh air in. You can also see how much natural light is pouring into the space. Bedroom

Besides a kitchen and bathroom, the next best place to install a skylight would have to be the bedroom. Emily Henderson installed not one, but two, VELUX Skylights in this bedroom that helped transform it into a retreat. An abundance of natural light and fresh air now comes from the skylights. But they also do something else pretty magical: they help to bring the outside in with the view. Imagine waking up in the morning being greeted by the beautiful day outside or going to bed at night looking at the stars.
