If you love Halloween decor that feels more whimsical than spooky, this DIY Halloween Entryway is one you’ll love! With just a few materials, you can transform your entryway into an enchanted space of draped ceilings, twinkle lights, and floating stars. One that feels like stepping straight into a storybook as soon as you walk through the door.

This simple project uses black draping, soft twinkle lights, and shimmering stars to create a ceiling display that instantly elevates your Halloween setup. The best part? It’s incredibly easy to do and completely customizable depending on your space.

And if you want to see the full effect in action (trust me, it’s pure magic), you can watch the Instagram Reel here to see how it all comes together.

How to Create an Enchanted Halloween Entryway Ceiling

Step 1: Hang the Drapes

Working one panel at a time, start securing the drapes to the ceiling using clear push pins.

  • Begin in a corner and attach the end of your fabric with about three to four pins
  • Let the fabric drape down a bit, then pin the middle section, drape again, and secure the other end.
  • Adjust the placement of the push pins and the amount of fabric you let fall to get that whimsical, flowing look.

Overlap each fabric panel slightly as you move across the ceiling. This adds depth and a s“oft, layered feel that makes the space look truly magical. Also, don’t be afraid to play around the with ”drapiness” of the fabric as you work your way down the ceiling. It’s so easy to go back and adjust sections with using the push pins.

Step 2: Add the Twinkle Lights

Once your drapes are in place, it’s time to make them glow. The lights that come with your drapes are typically arranged like a curtain, which makes this part easy.

  • Tape the main string of lights along one outer edge of the drapes to the ceiling using clear tape.
  • Unwind each strand of lights and gently weave them through the fabric.
  • Let the lights rest naturally in the folds of the drapes. No need to overthink it! Just aim for even light distribution to create that dreamy, starry-night effect.

Tip: You can certainly tape the strands of lights to the ceiling first and then install the fabric. I didn’t do this because I didn’t know where my drapes would end up secured to the ceiling and I love letting the lights fall down in the fabric.

Step 3: Hang the Stars

To finish off the look, add gold or metallic stars for that extra whimsical touch.

  • Tie a piece of black sewing thread or string to each star. Using black will “hide” the string among all the fabric so it looks like the stars are truly floating.
  • Secure the other end of the thread to the ceiling with a clear push pin so the stars appear to float in midair.
  • Cut the black string at various lengths so the stars aren’t all at the same length.

The result is a whimsical Halloween entryway that shimmers and glows every time you walk in. It’s equal parts elegant, magical, and perfect for Halloween!

Other Ways to Style The Enchanted Ceiling

  • Add LED flameless candles or glowing pumpkins at the base of your entryway to complete the look.
  • Use soft background music or a subtle fog machine for an immersive effect on Halloween night.
  • If you have a front table or console, layer in potion bottles, spell books, or cauldrons to extend the enchanted theme.

What I love most about this DIY is how instantly it transforms the mood of our home. It’s the kind of Halloween decor that makes you stop, smile, and feel like you’ve stepped into another world. One that’s cozy, whimsical, and filled with just the right touch of magic.

FAQ: Whimsical Halloween Entryway Decor

Can I use a different fabric color?
Yes! While black creates that moody Halloween vibe, dark purple, midnight blue, or even deep emerald green would all look beautiful and still give that whimsical, enchanted feel.

Can I leave this up after Halloween?
Absolutely! This project doubles as cozy, moody decor for fall and winter. For winter, you could swap out the black drapes for white drapes.

What if I rent and can’t use push pins?
No problem! You can use removable Command ceiling hooks or light clips to hold the drapes and lights without leaving marks.

Where can I find the materials?
Most of these items can be found on Amazon or at your local craft store. I linked everything I used at the beginning of this tutorial for easy shopping.
