Have you ever wondered how to hide wires behind a wall-mounted TV? Do you unplug them when not in use or is there some magical trick? Well, we’re here to show you exactly how we hid our TV cords in the wall. We had zero plans of tackling this project but I’m so glad we did! Especially once we realized it was only a 20-minute project.
Want to watch how we did it? Check out our full video guide to installing this kit to hide TV wires in the wall.
Here’s where we started with our TV cords exposed and going down the side of our media console.
While out at Lowe’s, we stumbled upon this in-wall TV cord kit that allows you to hide the TV cords behind the wall . We thought why not and gave it a shot. We’re thrilled with the results! As you can see here, the cords are no longer seen and we don’t have a jumbled mess hanging off the side of the media console.
Curious to know how to hide your own TV cords behind a wall-mounted TV? Here’s a quick rundown on how to use this kit (which I’m sure is similar to others out there). You can also watch our video above showing you the entire install as well!
Step 1: You’re going to make two holes in your wall. One behind your TV and one towards the bottom of the wall. Use a stud finder to find where the studs are located (you want to avoid them). Create your holes using the hole saw included in the kit. You can do this by hand or attach it to a power drill.
Step 2: Use the fish tape (or rods) to feed the cables behind the wall. You’ll start in the bottom hole with the cable on the hook and then push the rod up to the top hole. Grab it and pull it through until you’ve successfully pulled the cable through. Repeat for each cable you have, including the power cord included in the kit.
Step 3: Run the cables through each module that’s at each end of the power cord.
Step 4: Install the bottom module by screwing it into to place. With the top module, you secure the power cord to it first and then install it on the wall.
Step 5: The hardest part is done! Plug the female end of the additional power cord in the bottom module. Plug the male end in a surge protector or wall outlet.
Step 6: Plug the TV in the upper module and connect your cables and cords to the TV.
Is the cord of your TV still exposed because of how long it is? Use a zip tie to solve that problem!
Within 20 minutes your cables will be hidden and you’ll wonder what took you so long to try this (like we did).
This is something I was curious about before using this kit to hide TV wires. Thankfully, when you use a kit like the one we found at Lowe’s, it’s completely safe to hide your TV wires behind a wall!
It’s important to understand the potential safety risks if you’re thinking about DIYing this kind of system, though. In most states, simply drilling holes and running power cords behind a wall violates fire codes. In order to be safe, it’s important to use low-voltage wires. You can buy these on their own from Amazon, but if you purchase a kit for hiding TV wires these cords are typically included.
