Seeing Our Living Room in a Whole New Light

September 14, 2021

** This blog post is sponsored by Rugs USA.

With changing seasons comes the excitement for refreshing areas of our home. For me, it’s not focused on seasonal decor but more or less freshening up the space with a new rug, a simple update, throw pillows, or a new paint color. Which is exactly what I did with our living room. It’s been a year and a half since I’ve changed or added anything to the space and I was excited to get my hands on it!

The first update I knew I wanted to tackle was taking down the plantation shutters on the windows. They blocked so much sunlight from pouring in, so they had to go. I was able to trim out the windows, add new curtains, and see the sunlight beautifully shine into the living room.

And you know how everything snowballs into something else, right? Well, with the gorgeous color of the new curtains, I wanted to add a little bit more color to our living room. One of the best and easiest ways to make a big impact on a space is with a rug. And I decided on not one, but two rugs, from Rugs USA.

For the first time, I’m trying a layered rug look. I’m convinced everyone needs to try it in at least one space in their home. Here are my top three reasons why you can’t go wrong with layering rugs:

  1. It creates beautiful texture and depth for a space.
  2. The top, smaller rug can easily be switched out for a future refresh and it’s more affordable this way with it being the smaller rug of the two.
  3. It creates an element of surprise which is always fun.

Now, which rugs did I go with? I’m so excited you asked! Here’s are the two I’m using in our living room:

Off White Veronica Wool Braided Rug

Since I knew I was going to be layering my rugs, I needed a neutral rug for the base. I also kept in mind something with a little bit of comfort underfoot since we have luxury vinyl flooring.  The Veronica Wool Braided Rug checked off both of those boxes while also adding a beautiful textural element to our living room.

My friends, this rug is extremely soft and like a cloud to walk on. I also love that it’s an off-white versus a bright white which helps to soften the space even more with some warmth. For the size and layout of our living room, I ordered the 9 x 12 rug.

Beige Eldorado Rug

For the top rug, I knew I wanted a pop of color that added dimension but also served as a neutral to the space. Especially with the living room being open to other areas of our home. Rugs USA has an incredible variety of rugs but I kept coming back to this Beige Eldorado Rug.

I feel like this is a chameleon rug in such a good way. Depending on the time of day, the furniture placed in the room, and the textiles/pillows used, this rug beautifully works and changes the whole look of the space while certain colors of the rug are drawn out. You’ll find hints of beige, rust, blue, marigold, green, and cream woven throughout the rug design. And the design itself is beautiful and gives off a vintage feel and look. I’m using a 6’7” x 9’ to allow a decent amount of the bottom rug to show.

Rug Pad

Underneath the two rugs, I did place a rug pad down which is also from Rugs USA. This is the first time I’m trying one and I’ll never go without one again! With our luxury vinyl flooring and the rubber backing of the pad, it keeps our rugs in place to help prevent any slipping and tripping of moving rugs. And an added bonus, it provides another layer of comfort which is great for those with hardwood or tile floors.

Picking out these two rugs took me a few days to narrow down because picking out the right rug can be tricky! Especially when shopping online. What helped me decide with confidence are the tools Rugs USA offers to make it easy. For example, I utilized their “See this rug in your room” tool. You can upload a photo of your space, the application will “read” your room, and then virtually place the rug underneath your furniture/decor. Here’s how a few different rugs look in my living room using the tool:

Rugs USA also has its own blog where you can find so many additional resources like a size rug guide, care guides, ideas & inspo, seeing the rugs in real homes, and tips & tricks from experts. It’s all there for you to help make the best rug decision for your home. I also love to check out their Instagram to see rugs in homes as well.

Now, in addition to the window makeover and the new rugs, I also added and switched out a few other things in the living room. I’m always trying to find a way to add more seating and comfort to our living room since we hang out here the most. These two Natural Jute Braided Poufs are the perfect addition. They add a touch of warmth, texture, and go great with the rugs. And guess what!? They’re also from Rugs USA. Did you know they have more than just rugs on their website? You can also find poufs and lighting.

I also switched out and updated a few throw pillows on our couch. This is where I like to add a touch of seasonal decor through the use of color. For example, with the rust and leather pillows for fall.

Alright, my friends, I’m off to go enjoy this cozy, bright and refreshed space of ours. I’m thrilled with how it all came together and how with just a few changes it had such a big impact. If you’re inspired to refresh a space, the easiest way to get started is with the rug! Make sure to head to Rugs USA where they have a huge variety to choose from at amazing prices and they offer free shipping in the US.

I found a few fun pots for my houseplants, a gorgeous magnifying glass, and a few other items for our coffee table and couch.

I never know what I’m going to find when I walk into Homesense since it’s always rotating with amazing finds. But I do know I’ll walk out with a few new favorites for my home at affordable prices. It was a hit for Halloween and just as fun for this time of year as well. I built frames wrapped with a plastic drop cloth but you can also secure the drop cloth over the windows using command strips. The videos are from @atmosfx and we use a mini projector to play them on the screen. Place a Bluetooth speaker outside and you’re in business! Such a fun addition this time of year for the exterior of your home.

This was exhausting but worth the money we saved doing it ourselves. And why remove them? We’re using a different stone around the pool and we want it to be cohesive up to the house. Don’t worry, someone got one heck of a deal on these pavers, we made a little money, and someone else got them out of our driveway. I’d say that’s a win-win. Stayed tuned for the entire pool process as we enter 2023. It’s going to be pretty exciting to watch!
Our patio space has served us so well over the yea Our patio space has served us so well over the years and now it’s time for a change because we’re getting a POOL!! Sharing this with you makes it even more real because just a year ago I would have told you it isn’t in the cards for us. We’ll be breaking ground soon but first we have to remove the screen enclosure. Spoiler: we won’t be putting one back up around the pool. It has already made the biggest difference visually and SO much natural light pours into our home now with it gone. It’s going to be so exciting seeing this all unfold so stay tuned! Up next: removing the pavers.

Fast forward to this week as I headed to @homesense_us for some holiday shopping, and I ended up finding a few pieces for our home that remind me of that core memory on the beach. The beautiful wicker bench caught my eye first followed by the comforter and toss pillows. Everything at amazing price points while not sacrificing style and quality. #HomesensePartner
