Our 2018 Home Project Goals

February 24, 2018

Our New Home Closing Day

Spring weather has arrived, at least here in Florida, and we’ve been so motivated to get things done in and outside of our home Of course, 75% of our days have been spent outside. I can’t tell you how good it feels to get our hands dirty again pulling weeds, getting garden beds ready, and basically de-cluttering our yard of unneeded plants that have taken over. This all brings me to this post today.

The start of the new year didn’t inspire today’s post but the fresh start of spring. It’s a fresh start and a huge motivator for us to start up the house projects because we tend to slow down during the winter months. So, to hold ourselves accountable and get some things done around our home, we’re sharing our 2018 home project goals. Especially since we’re approaching 1 year of living in our new home and we still don’t have a dining room table. Thank goodness for our breakfast nook! Here’s what we’re hoping to accomplish this year and I’d be happy with accomplishing just half of it.

Kitchen

Although our kitchen cabinets just got a huge makeover, there’s still so much more to do in this space. We’d love to add backsplash, add a small island, and install wooden shelves where there are existing white shelves. And oh yeah, concrete countertops. We’ll see how many of these things we can check off this year!

Navy and White Kitchen Reveal

Laundry Room

I certainly have big goals for our laundry room. You can’t help but pass it if you’re headed to any part of our home except the dining room and master bedroom. I certainly want to turn this into a space that makes laundry more enjoyable and flows with the rest of the home. We’ve already taken down the wire shelving and installed a wooden shelf. But I want to take it a step further by painting/stenciling the tile floor, adding either adhesive tile or wallpaper to the wall, add navy cabinetry, and lighting above the sink. The sink will need to be updated as well but will probably be put on the list for 2019.

Organizing your laundry room.

Breakfast Nook

I found our breakfast nook table for $30 on Facebook Marketplace. A little white paint and we gained a brand new table! I added our dining room chairs to this table but when we painted our cabinets navy, it all started to clash. I’d love to get a new set of chairs at a reasonable price (the ones I have my heart set on are certainly out of my price range at $400 for 4 chairs). Then changing out the lighting above the breakfast nook table is a must and possibly adding a rug. This is what we started with when we moved in because we all love a great before image.

Dining Room

I just have one goal for our dining room. Okay, maybe two. To finally purchase or even build a dining room table plus the chairs and get rid of the random furniture placed in this space. The dining room is such a focal point to our home when you walk in and has an amazing view of our patio, so I want to make sure we design this space to compliment both areas. No big deal. . . But here’s another fun before image since there still isn’t anything in this space except for a rug and the random furniture.

Our dining room before

Master Bedroom

We’ve already started on our master bedroom but then it came to a stop because of focusing on the main areas of our home. We did paint over the orange walls, knock down a part of the ceiling that was more of an overhang, invest in a new bed/headboard, and replaced the flooring. Progress but still a little ways to go. Our goal this year? To add a rug, hang roman bamboo shades, find lamps, and honestly just make sense of the space. But, I can tell you, it’s already better than this before picture taken the day we closed on the home.

The before image of our master bedroom.

Oliver’s Room

We painted Oliver’s room the same color as his previous nursery and of course used all of the same decor. But now that we have a little toddler running around, I’d love to change the decor up a bit and transform it into more of little boy’s room. Especially since we designed the room not knowing if we were having a little boy or girl. Best surprise ever! But I do love how bright his room is and that the piece Ryan and I painted together is a focal point of the room.

Playroom

I’ve enjoyed sharing our design plans for the playroom and how we installed the board and batten for half the price. But now we’ve arrived at the place in our makeover where we need to figure out the storage asap. The walls turned out amazing but aren’t even noticed because of all the toys. So, we’ll be adding storage, decor on the walls, and a roman shade to complete the playroom this year.

Cutting Cost with Board and Batten

Exterior

What would I like to get done or what can we afford within our budget when it comes to the outside of our home? I’d love to get our home painted but that’s also for 2019. But what I can do instead is get a new garage door opener, paint the front door, rip out and replace the shrubs in the front, and focus on the landscaping throughout all sides of the home. We recently sprinkled grass seed in the front yard, started to build our raised garden boxes, and have been clearing overgrown areas of the yard. I can’t wait to see our landscaping transform even more! This is the yard that greeted us the day we were handed the keys to the house.

Our yard when we first moved in

Besides other small things like updating our outlets, adding more lamps, painting a few spaces, etc. these are our home project goals for 2018. I’m pretty sure I’m going to turn this into a list I can check off to help hold us accountable. And now that you know what we want to tackle this year in our home, please ask me from time to time what we’ve gotten done. I hope this inspires you to create a home project goal list for this year as well! Lastly, if you want a tour of our whole home, you can check that out here.

Let’s keep in touch!

Mainly because of what I’m saving vs buying them. Won’t be saving much on time but I’M MAKING TILES! Never thought I’d hear myself say that. Make sure to follow along because if this works out, I have a feeling a lot of you are already eyeing a spot in your home to try your own DIY cement tiles.

Thank you @vintagerevivals and @abby_roadhome for showing it’s possible with your gorgeous bathroom tiles!

We got the call that the pool build is starting! W We got the call that the pool build is starting! Which had me scrambling to dig up all the plants that were in the way in an effort to save them. Literally down to the last second before the crew showed up. Exciting day but you know what’s even more exciting? Knowing the next crew will officially be breaking ground with the excavation phase of the build.
This time of year is full of organizing and purgin This time of year is full of organizing and purging to bring spaces back to life. But sometimes all a space needs to feel refreshed is, well, a refresh and a little attention. Your number one requested space was the living room. So I gave mine a refresh with some unique and gorgeous finds from @homesense_us . I found a few fun pots for my houseplants, a gorgeous magnifying glass, and a few other items for our coffee table and couch.

I never know what I’m going to find when I walk into Homesense since it’s always rotating with amazing finds. But I do know I’ll walk out with a few new favorites for my home at affordable prices. If you haven’t yet, I urge you to check and see if you have a Homesense near you! #DiscoverHomesense #HomesensePartner

We can be one of our biggest cheerleaders, but together we’re going to do big things. Go ahead and write down a big, small and a few in-between projects you want to get done this year in your home. Kicking it off with intention and that reminder that we can do this. Ready to get started?! Let me know in the comments the first project you want to tackle!
We finally got the Christmas/winter edition of the We finally got the Christmas/winter edition of the window projection up and running! It was a hit for Halloween and just as fun for this time of year as well. I built frames wrapped with a plastic drop cloth but you can also secure the drop cloth over the windows using command strips. The videos are from @atmosfx and we use a mini projector to play them on the screen. Place a Bluetooth speaker outside and you’re in business! Such a fun addition this time of year for the exterior of your home.
It’s the last little bit of the demo we needed t It’s the last little bit of the demo we needed to do in order to give the green light for the pool to start. And 2,456 pavers later, it’s done! This was exhausting but worth the money we saved doing it ourselves. And why remove them? We’re using a different stone around the pool and we want it to be cohesive up to the house. Don’t worry, someone got one heck of a deal on these pavers, we made a little money, and someone else got them out of our driveway. I’d say that’s a win-win. Stayed tuned for the entire pool process as we enter 2023. It’s going to be pretty exciting to watch!
Our patio space has served us so well over the yea Our patio space has served us so well over the years and now it’s time for a change because we’re getting a POOL!! Sharing this with you makes it even more real because just a year ago I would have told you it isn’t in the cards for us. We’ll be breaking ground soon but first we have to remove the screen enclosure. Spoiler: we won’t be putting one back up around the pool. It has already made the biggest difference visually and SO much natural light pours into our home now with it gone. It’s going to be so exciting seeing this all unfold so stay tuned! Up next: removing the pavers.
This holiday season we were able to travel to my h This holiday season we were able to travel to my hometown for the first time in awhile. We were greeted by the most beautiful sunset on the beach. Fast forward to this week as I headed to @homesense_us for some holiday shopping, and I ended up finding a few pieces for our home that remind me of that core memory on the beach. The beautiful wicker bench caught my eye first followed by the comforter and toss pillows. Everything at amazing price points while not sacrificing style and quality. #HomesensePartner

Mixing a thrill of a find with a core memory, I guarantee you'll fall in love with your home even more as you go to decorate. Decorating your home isn't grasping on to the newest trend or what you think others would do. It's what YOU want to do. And sometimes that's based on an emotional connection. Oh, the stories your spaces will be able to tell as you decorate each one. Start with seeing if there’s a @homesense_us near you! #DiscoverHomesense #HomesenseSarasota
