But First, What Is a Modern Farmhouse Color Scheme?

Before we start exploring my favorite paint colors for a modern farmhouse aesthetic, let’s make sure we’re clear on what modern farmhouse really is.

Modern farmhouse is a design style that is usually characterized by a few common traits:

  • Neutral tones like whites, off-whites, grays and greiges are used as foundational colors
  • Dark hues like blacks, deep grays and navy blues are used to provide contrast with light neutrals
  • Pops of color are incorporated sparingly, usually with muted blues, greens or earthy shades
  • Rustic, industrial and modern design elements are balanced in your decor

One of my favorite things about modern farmhouse design is that while white and other light neutrals are a big part of the aesthetic, everything still feels warm. Warm whites and warm grays keep a space from feeling too stark and make even a modern home feel cozy.

I prefer to paint with Sherwin-Williams colors, but you can absolutely find alternatives to these colors from Benjamin Moore and other paint brands. Just make sure you don’t try to color match with another brand – it never really turns out right! Instead, do some research to find the closest-match paint color that the other brand sells.

MODERN FARMHOUSE WHITE PAINT COLORS

When I’m looking for modern farmhouse whites, I love to find colors that feel light and bright without being too cold. The two white paints below are my favorites!

Whites by Sherwin Williams

Sherwin-Williams Extra White

My upper kitchen cabinets, doors, and trim are all painted with SW Extra White. It’s a very bright and crisp white that’s refreshing for any space. Extra White is actually the most popular trim color in the United States – most new-build homes are painted with Extra White for their trim and ceilings.

This color is definitely a bit cooler than some of the other modern farmhouse paint colors I’m sharing today, but it can still work well as wall paint if you have warmer light.

Sherwin-Williams Snowbound

If you don’t want a white that’s as bright as Extra White, then SW Snowbound is your color. It’s also a great white to use on the trim of the exterior of your home because it’s dark enough that it won’t look too stark outdoors.

Snowbound is a warm off-white with pink undertones, so it looks creamy on the wall without looking yellow.

MODERN FARMHOUSE GRAY PAINT COLORS

You already know my favorite gray is Seattle, but it’s kind of like the secret gray of Sherwin Williams. You can read all about it and how to find it in my post, The Perfect Gray Paint for Any Home. But these other two grays I’m sharing below are close favorites – and easier to find!

Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray

SW Repose Gray seems to be a really popular Sherwin-Williams gray – I’m always seeing reviews of it online! It would be great for a bedroom or main living space.

Repose Gray has green undertones, which makes it a warm gray. In rooms with lots of natural light, it will keep a space feeling bright while also providing a lot more depth than white paint.

Sherwin-Williams Mindful Gray

Mindful Gray is another great Sherwin-Williams modern farmhouse paint color. This one is even warmer than Repose Gray, thanks to green and taupe undertones. I’d actually consider this one to be more of a greige paint because it is so warm.

BEST MODERN FARMHOUSE BEIGE PAINT COLORS

I really consider these cream colors a greige because depending on the lighting, they can look slightly gray. Which is really the best of both worlds.

Sherwin-Williams Dover White

SW Dover White is a very warm and creamy white paint color. It has yellow undertones that look almost orange and looks very creamy on the wall.

Dover White was almost Oliver’s nursery color but we went with a cooler gray that’s almost white. You can see that color, Aria, in the post Modern Gender Neutral Nursery

Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige

Accessible Beige is such a beautiful neutral! It’s darker than a true white or off-white paint color, but still light enough that it can really brighten a space. It’s also much warmer than most gray paint colors so it’s perfect for those who don’t want to commit to full-on gray everywhere.

We used Accessible Beige in our playroom with SW Extra White board and batten trim and it looks so bright and airy!

BEST MODERN FARMHOUSE BLUE PAINT COLORS

Soft blues and blue-green hues are such a beautiful way to add some color to a modern farmhouse home, and these blues are two of my favorites!

Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt

SW Sea Salt is a really unique color. I actually like to think of it as a warm gray with strong blue-green undertones because it’s so muted. It’s a lovely way to add color without it feeling too bright or overpowering.

Sea Salt will be our master bathroom color. I’m obsessed with it! I’ve seen other people use it in their kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. It’s seriously like a breath of fresh air.

Sherwin-Williams Hinting Blue

Another reason I included blues in this modern farmhouse color scheme is because I love to paint the ceiling of my front porch or back patio a very light blue. This is actually a traditional design technique in the Southern part of the U.S. especially and is a great way to make your front entrance feel brighter.

Hinting Blue, featured here, would be a great color to use on a ceiling. Check out my back patio ceiling for inspiration!

BEST DARK MODERN FARMHOUSE PAINT HUES

When it comes to a modern farmhouse design, you’re going to see darker hues incorporated. These are the perfect shades to use on furniture, cabinets, and your front door. It can even be fun to use dark paint colors for interior doors, trim and windows!

Sherwin-Williams Outerspace

Currently, we’re using SW Outerspace for our bottom kitchen cabinets. It’s even more stunning in person!  It’s a deep gray paint color that has cool, blue undertones that are visible in bright lighting. It looks so good paired with SW Extra White and the crisp, white subway tiles and countertops in our kitchen.

Sherwin-Williams Gauntlet Gray

SW Gauntlet Gray is a really lovely mid-toned gray paint color. I’ve seen a few bloggers use Gauntlet Gray as their exterior home color. It’s a great exterior paint color if you want a darker look for your house but don’t want it to look black either.

Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore

SW Iron Ore is one my favorite black paint colors, especially for a modern farmhouse color scheme. It’s a soft black with warm undertones, so it doesn’t feel too harsh or contrast too much with a light, neutral interior.

Iron Ore is a great charcoal black for an interior front door and also works great as an accent wall paint color, like we’ve used in my bedroom below.
